  • Hi there,
I went into a restaurant called The Quay and my parents ordered me a Pimms with my meal. The lady came up to me and asked me for ID, I said I was 17, and that my parents brought it for me and that it was with my meal. However she said I was underage and could not have it, is this right???

  • Yes, although you could have had beer, wine or cider. Pimm's in gin-based, and as such they could have made it 'too strong' for you to handle (yeah, right)!

    Age limits
    * People over the age of 16 can buy beer, wine or cider with a meal as long as it's served with a meal and consumed in an area used solely for eating meals.
    * It is illegal for people under the age of 18 to buy or be sold alcohol in any other circumstances.

  • It sounds right. I some European countries you can do that but not in the States or Canada. Some states even ban parents from giving their kids alcohol at home.

  • Yep. It's illegal for you to drink alcohol on licensed premises if you are under 18. The restaurant could have closed and your parents could have got a criminal record.

  • Yes you can as long as you are 16 years old. If your parents or carers or anyone who is 18 or over purchases you an alcholic drink you can have it if you are 16. Some pubs will allow you to drink if you are below this age if purchased by an adult but in restaurants it is strictly just 16 year olds and 17 years olds.

  • I thought it was a nation wide rule that you had to be 21 years of age and No your parents cannot buy you a drink in a restaurant that business could lose their liquor license and your parents could be charged with serving a minor alcohol

  • Absolutely. And you should be glad she didn't call the Police. Your parents could have been arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

  • Yes. It is illegal for someone under 18 years of age to drink alchohol in a resturaunt.

  • if your parents have bought it for you then you should be able to drink it because it is not illegal to drink alcohol if you are under 18 its just illegal to purchase it so she shouldnt have stopped you however it is frowned apon and im sure that the restuarent can take the drink away if they give you a refund

  • Yes according to the 1933 childrens act People aged 16 and 17, may consume wine, beer or cider with a table meal, provided they are with an adult and an adult orders it.

  • This depends on what country you are in.

  • Absolutely, your parents can be charged with procuring alcohol for a minor or contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Additionally the restaurant can lose their liquor license for serving you the drink, even if your parents bought it.

  • yes, she was right to tell you no.
in fact, not only could you be possibly charged for underage drinking, but your parents could be arrested or charged with Providing for a Minor.
you should tell them to be careful, so that nothing like that happens. if you want alcohol, ask them to buy it for you at home, or let them order the drink for themselves, and then switch them drinks.

  • yess its rite...your parents could get into trouble for giving you alcohol

  • The waitress did the right thing.
Your parents should count their blessings she wasn't an undercover cop.
Laws vary from country to country, state to state, province to province.
But generally speaking in America you gotta be 21 to consume any alcohol regardless of who orders it.
Don't like it? Move to a place where you can.

  • yea shes right...your not the one who would get in trouble..your parents could, and the resteraunt could for allowing you to drink it

  • You are allowed to drink alcohol provided it is taken with a meal and you are accompanied by your parents - however you are limited to wine or beer only.

  • That's correct.
In some states underage consumption is legal, just not the purchase. But it can't be in public, only in private, like your house.
But most states if you're caught drinking under 21 they'll take you to jail or give you a citation depending on how old you are.

  • The law pertains not to the BUYING of the alcoholic drink, but to the SERVING of the alcoholic drink.

By the way, your parents commited a felony for ordering an alcoholic beverage for a minor (even their own child).

  • It really amuses me when people jump in from the wrong country and talk about their own laws without giving it a 2nd thought that they are totally missing the point.

This young lady would not be even discussing this question if she was in the US or perhaps she would give a state for reference if she was.

Laws are touched on with regards to ages well they were when i went to secondary school lol ...........

I distinctly remember being told you could have a drink with a meal if your parents bought it.

technically pimms is a fairly weak drink watered down quite heavily with lemonade. Not something that would affect most people just having one. a can from tesco ready mixed
    No.1.

    READY TO DRINK.

    PERFECTLY MIXED.

    ESTD. 1840.

    5.4%vol.

much better than a glass of wine at what 13% -14% average alcohol.

I think your parents were perfectly using their common sense and introducing you to alcohol in a controlled environment. Whats better teenagers down the park downing forbidden alcohol or the odd glass with a meal with your parents?

Women in the restaurant did not know her laws correctly and could have advised the correct drink allowed. Did you have id to say your were 17 on you? but maybe scared for her job though as often local councils send out under-age buyers to catch them out. Those caught face heavy fines and also the person serving can be fined.

  • You need to watch what you say you could get you parents in trouble. It is illegal for anyone even your parents to buy or serve you any alcohol at home or in public.

  • cant you wait till you're the normal age. cow.

  • your parents can get in trouble, the waitress was right

  • In the UK:

If you are 16 or over:

You can drink beer, wine or cider whilst eating a meal in a restaurant or an eating area of a pub, but not in the bar (and you must be accompanied by someone over 18).

But you can't buy any alcohol yourself until you are 18.

  • Yes, it is right. You must be 21 to have any alcoholic drink in all 50 states by law.

  • The owner of the restaurant (and any licensed place) can have their liquor license taken away and can be fined for ANY minor drinking alcohol it their establishment even with parental consent.

  • well seen as though you said you were 17 when you have to be 18 to drink then yes she is correct on not letting you drink , you can only drink underage with parents permission in your own house. ( i think :s )

  • It doesn't matter who buys it for you, if you are under age in the United States you cannot drink until you are 21.
