Ie The natural processes that contribute to it happening.Tropical cyclones are intense low pressure systems that form over tropical oceans with sustained winds exceeding gale force (more than 63 km/h) surrounding the centre. Their circular wind pattern has a clockwise rotation in the Southern Hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. At lower latitudes (50-100) tropical cyclones tend to be small in size (sometimes less than 100 km in diameter) but in higher latitudes they typically grow to more than 1000 km and occasionally to more than 2000 km in diameter.
Cyclone Tracy was formed in an area of low pressure around 350 km NE of Darwin in mid December, 1974, coinciding with vigorous convective cloud, formed as a result of a warm ocean surface (above 26 deg C) and several physical parameters contributing to a deeply humid and unstable atmosphere. This resulted in the creation of a tropical depression, first detected on 20 December 1974. The newly formed tropical depression moved slowly southwest and intensified, passing close to Bathurst Island on the 23rd and 24th Dec 1974. Then it turned sharply east-southeastward, and headed straight at Darwin, striking the city early on Christmas Day.
